January 15, 1978, Carnegie Hall
Robert Hart Baker (later conductor of the Asheville, N.C. orchestra) becomes music director in his conducting début. Pamela Frank (later a stellar soloist and winner of the Avery Fisher Career Grant) is member of the second violins section.

February 25, 1978, Carnegie Hall
New York première of
Piece for Orchestra, by David Smadbeck, 23.

April 2, 1978, Carnegie Hall
Performance features New York première of
Vathek, Symphonic Poem, Op. 56, by Horatio Parker.

Sponsored by Bernard Kapell, the William Kapell Memorial Award (a cash prize of $250 and a performance with the orchestra to a student under 21) becomes an annual event.
