Orchestra

Kenneth Jean, 22, a student of Jean Morel and Walter Handl at Juilliard, becomes music director.  Members of the orchestra include violinist Mark Piskunov (later Peskanov) and Schlomo Mintz (both to become noted soloists as adults), violist Lawrence Dutton (later of the Emerson String Quartet), cellist Todd Solondz (later a noted independent filmmaker), and percussionist Daniel Druckman (later principal timpanist of the New York Philharmonic).

Daily News:  "Jean . . . conducts with a kind of genius and trains his teenage musicians with the intelligence of an old-timer. The [Youth Symphony Orchestra] is one of the best orchestras [of its kind]."  (Ron Byer  12/16/74)
