Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the 2014/2015 Season of the New York Youth Symphony. Applications will open on Monday June 16, 2014.


In order to participate in a NYYS Program the applicant's birthdate must fall between November 24, 2002 and May 25, 1992, inclusive. All applicants must complete a single application that may be applied to one or more programs. The application fee is $80 and is non-refundable.

2014/2015 Calendar of Events

The full calendar of events for the 2014/2015 season will be published in August 2014, but the attached PDF has a list of required dates for each program. Please review this document before applying to see if you can commit to the requirements. Orchestra students are required to attend the weekly rehearsal prior to each concert.

Dates are subject to change and students will receive a complete schedule upon being accepted into the program.

Program Registration Fees

The cost of each NYYS program is $5000/per student, however all students receive full-tuition scholarships. Once accepted into a NYYS program there is a registration fee to confirm your participation. The 2014/2015 season registration fees are:

Apprentice Conducting: $125
Chamber Music: $325
Composition: $275 (includes manditory Kickoff Weekend Fees)
Jazz: $50
Orchestra: $300 (includes manditory Kickoff Weekend Fees)

Please note: Kickoff Weekend will be September 19-21, 2014 at Camp DeWolfe in Wading River, NY . It is required for all Orchestra and Composition students.

Work Study

The New York Youth Symphony's core values state that no one is to be excluded by their ability to pay. Therefore, work study opportunities are available for students to recoup the Registration Fees. Work study opportunities include assisting at the annual benefit, helping to set up rehearsals and workshops, and working in the administrative office. Work study applications will be sent to all students upon acceptance into a program. Students are paid at a rate of $10 per hour and can work up to the amount of their program's registration fee.

Scheduling Your Audition

Upon submitting your application and application fee, you will receive an email within two (2) business days with the link for you to schedule your audition (the administrative office is closed on Fridays during the summer). Please do not phone the office regarding audition times as they can only be scheduled online.

Audition Dates for the 2014/2015 season are:

Orchestra: August 24 -27 and September 2-7, 2014
Jazz: September 28 & 30, 2014
Chamber: September 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 13, 14, 20, & 21, 2014 
Composition: September 8 & 9, 2014
Apprentice Conducting: September 16, 2014

Online Application

All applications are required to be completed online (and not through a smart phone). The application should take between 15-20 minutes to complete. Please make sure you have all of the documents and information required below before you begin your application as you can not save your work and resume at a later time. Required Information and Documents include:

  • Digital copy of Passport, State ID or Birth Certificate (JPEG or PDF files smaller than 1mb preferred)
  • Your private music teacher's name and contact information, if applicable.
  • Your school's name and music teacher's contact information, if applicable.
  • Emergency contact information.
  • Contact information for parents/guardians and grandparents.
  • If you are under 18 years old, a parent/guardian must be available to provide legal consent.
